The
Rev Dr Clive Thomas Jackson (real legal name!)
has had a very colourful career in entertainment to date, but
then what would you expect from a man who started entertaining
folks at Scout campfires and gang shows and now drives Rolf Harris
as a hobby!
The Dr. left school and was tempted, by the threat of homelessness,
to try and scrape a living from one of the main loves of his life,
Rock and Roll!
His achievements with his band Dr & The Medics are well documented
from their first No1. Indie hit "Happy But Twisted,"
to their 2.6 million selling No1 hit, in 19 countries, "Spirit
in the Sky." Add to this his contribution to Ferry Aids No1
version of Ferry Cross The Mersey, the bands No. 23 hit Burn and
the fact that The Doctor wrote Grimley Fiendish a number 22 hit
for the Damned and the Doctor's status as a one hit wonder comes
into question!!
From day 1 the bad also built up an unbeatable reputation as a
live act. In 1985 NME described them as THE live act of the year! |
|
The present line up
has enhanced this reputation and now plays up to 90 shows a year at every
kind of event imaginable from Butlins to Biker Festivals. Throughout the
band's career the Doctor has also worked as a stand up comedian, DJ and
compere.
He started his own psychedelic/punk/Glam club, "The Clinic,"
in London'sdarkest Soho in 1982. This became the now legendary "Alice
in Wonderland," which saw bands such as The Cult, The Damned, The
Mission and of course the Doctor's very own Medics, grace it's stage.
It also gave birth to "The Magical Mystery Trips". These saw
up to 3,000 people being transported to such locations as Chislehurst
Caves and Lowestoft Pier to revel ion an all night assault on the senses
with light shows, bands DJs and much more. As well as running the club
and the events The Doctor was also the main DJ and compere. His style
was so unique that it was recorded and used on 2 albums, "A Splash
Of Colour" and "A Pretty Smart Way To Catch A Lobster."
Also in the early 80's Clive dabbled with stand up, appearing many times
on the bill at the fledgling "Vic Reeves Big Night out," at
the Albany Empirein Deptford. Vic's partner at the time, Tom Broadbent,
also partnered Clive in a revue that mixed Jazz and comedy and toured
universities in the early 80's. However the lure of Rock and Roll proved
too strong and apart from 1 appearance as his alter ego (Rock legend Philip
Jones!) in 1992, he has preferred to apply his unique wit and wisdom to
compering at events & shows.
Now
working with co-host, Charlie Andrews, they are able to perform,
and present, at most events including corporate, exhibitions,
theatre shows and rallies, most notably The Derby Rock and Blues,
Europe's largest Custom
bike show which attracts over 15,000 bikers for a weekend of mayhem.
With many years of experience between them they have built up
a fantastic rapport and are able to apply their craft at any event.
So if you are looking for unique hosts for your event please look
no further as no matter what your needs...
The Doctor and Charlie are here!!
“Oooh
Charlie you want to play vinyl? Let me show you how to do it!”
Hmm OK so sometimes one should consider how long a DJ has been
at this game, and how did they manage before the amazing CD came
into play! |

Charlie
looked at me a tad perplexed “Byatch, let me explain what we used to do
before these small silver things came into being”.
He got the record, set it up perfectly and
of course it came out on air without a slight hint of a hitch! I’d
been shown how to play vinyl about a week ago and I was so excited that
I could do it, I was bursting to show my expertise to someone – perhaps
not to someone who has been in the DJ business for over 10 years next
time eh?!?!
Since
my last post in the Rock and Roll Ponderosa,
I have found comfort in the fact that quite a few people are not aware
of the ‘wonderful’ phrases I have learnt since helping Charlie – WELL,
I now believe Charlie (with some input from Autumn) is going to set up
his very own dictionary – (very likely spelt DICKshunary) for us more
naïve people out there!
One
phrase which will have to be included is “The Hairy Banana Hammock”
Usually at this time of year I'm asked to say a few words about myself
for the web. |
|
You know the kind of thing, my favourite colour is tope, favourite word
is meniscus, favourite hobby yoghurt gargling and favourite person is
Grandpa Tweenie. Well this year I'm not telling you any of that. Instead
I am singing the praises of my co-host Mr ....... hang on I've got it
written down here...Oh yes..... Charlie Andrews, the Gothfather of Viking
Rock. Well his favourite Colour is American Tan, favourite word is probe,
hobbies include train spotting, jigsaw puzzles and Transcendental Sex
(An alternative to Tantric sex involving less people!) and favourite person
Ghandi!
A lot of people ask me about Charlie's love of Viking rock, many more
ask me what the F**k IS Viking Rock?!! Well, Charlie developed his love
of all things Norse from a very early age. He was raised in the Fiords
of Norway by a family of Dolphins who found him hanging out with some
very undesirable Sperm Whales that were getting him into bad habits such
as Transcendental Sex!!
Now Dolphins are very intelligent and their calming and enchanting communicative
singing and clicking have been recorded by man for many ambient relaxation
CD's over the years. We are strangely drawn to their noises as though
they are voices calling to us from the long distant past of our evolution.
But we are lucky, we can turn the F**king din off! Poor old Charlie had
it evening, noon and night and quite simply it drove him insane!! (As
we can clearly see).
So as soon as he hit puberty, at 44, and was able to leave his aquatic
chums and head straight for civilisation to begin his life long therapy
of pounding his mind to pieces with the loudest and most violent sounds
he could get his hands on, "Rock and Roll!" And hence the Rock
and Roll Ponderosa was Born, yelling and bopping!!
The above story is true. Charlie is still referred to in his native Fiord
as "Dances with Dolphins." I have had the pleasure of working
with the great man himself over the past years and I can verify that he
loves his fish and never misses an episode of Flipper!!!
